The Independent Journalist

Maria: Maria considers herself an independent journalist. As a journalism student, she still has a lot to learn about the profession before beginning her career at a broadcast news network, but she’s gotten a lot of great hands-on practice, thanks to her classes, that are helping her prepare for life as a journalist, but she just felt like she could be doing more. She enjoys writing practice news stories for her classes, but she feels like they’re being wasted when the professor simply grades them and hands them back. The stories she writes are solid, but they never see the light of day…they are graded, and then they’re finished.

That’s why Maria turned to News or Views. She knew that it wasn’t likely that she could submit her stories to the local broadcast companies. For one thing, they have their own staff for news writing, and for another, she has no professional experience. But with News or Views, not only can she create her own website to host the news she writes, but she can upload video and audio as well, and with the webcam that she already has, she transforms her living room into her own broadcast studio! She still writes great news stories for class, but now, instead of filing them away once they’re graded, she brings them home and records her presentation of the news. When she can, she uses her webcam to record interviews with sources, and when she can’t, she at least captures the audio and sends it out as an audio newscast. Now, not only does Maria have a forum for creating and sharing the news that is important to her, but she also is amassing quite a few news clips…clips that will help her find a job after graduation next year! Now, along with her school portfolio, she’ll have dozens of video and audio clips of her news writing and production skills, all because she signed up for a free News or Views account!
