The Professional Journalist
Jenny:
Jenny is a beat reporter with her local newspaper, a medium-sized operation with a daily circulation of just over 60,000. She has worked at the paper for four years
and is now considered a senior writer on the civic government beat. Her stories have won local awards, and her portfolio if filled with impressive clips. Lately, though,
Jenny has been thinking about a beat change. She knows the ins and outs of the local governmental structure, and her knowledge of the system makes her a great civics beat
writer, but these days she finds herself more interested in education news. Last month there was an opening at the education desk, but her editor would not green light the
switch. He said she was too important to lose on the civic beat. Jenny pointed out that she could be just as important to the education desk, but her editor told her she
had proven herself in her current beat and that education would be a “whole new ballgame” for her.
Jenny was far from discouraged. She loves her job, but she wants to report on education. That night, she created an account on News or Views, a site that lets her write and
publish the stories she wants to write. Now she spends a two extra evenings each week working on education stories and publishing them to her very own news website, and her
stories are being read by more than just 60,000 people! Before long, Jenny will have enough stories on News or Views to show her editor that she can be an asset to the
education section. And if he doesn’t change his mind, Jenny now has an entire online portfolio of educational clips to supplement her hard cover civic portfolio. She has solid
education beat experience and a four-year history with her current publication…Jenny will have no trouble finding the job of her dreams!
